After years of uncertainty, the family of slain Policewoman Corporal (Posthumously promoted Sergeant) Agatha Nabin may finally receive the support they deserve. The widower, Paul Nabin, a civil servant with one of the state agencies struggling to care for their three children had almost lost hope.
Consequently, he told The Chronicle that ‘if the killers of my wife have not been found, what happens to the promise made by then Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr James Oppong Boanu and the Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry, for the state to sponsor our children until they attained the age of 18?’.
The children are Christabel Afoe Nabin, nine (9), now fourteen (14), Josephine Adjoa Nabin, six (6) now eleven (11) and Jessica Akosua Nabin, two (2), now eight (8).
However, a conversation with the Director General of Police Welfare, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Iddi Lansah brought new light.
The Commissioner, though new to his position, took the initiative to investigate the matter.
He discovered that unlike laid down procedure, the widower who needed to apply for the monthly support payments, which would be processed through the Controller and Accountant General’s Office inadvertently failed to do that.
COP Mr Lansah who spoke personally with the widower and advised him on what to do next assured of the administration’s effort to Kick-start the stalled process as soon as practicable.
A number of colleagues of late Sgt Nabin hailed the Director General’s direct intervention and are hopeful that the process is now set to begin.
Bubbling with hope, they said that, the family with this assurance is hopeful that this long-overdue support will alleviate some of their struggles.
On July 30, 2019 Policewoman Cpl Agatha Nabin, who was on snapcheck duties at the outskirts of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, was shot and killed by masked gunmen.
Heavy Police deployment from the National Headquarters (Counter Terrorism Unit-CTU, Special Weapons And Tactics-SWAT, Anti-Armed Robbery Unit -CID) together with elements from the Northern Regional Command and backed by the military embarked on full scale operation in Tamale to smoke out the perpetrators.
Within twenty-four hours of the operation, a number of suspects were rooted and having been screened put before the courts.
Later, the Attorney General’s Office advised that the accused were not identified by anyone and as such were discharged.
Since then, search for the killers of the Policewoman has stalled.
