GJA Elections Committee Engages Candidates in Key Virtual Briefing on Proxy Voting, others

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee, in collaboration with the Electoral Commission’s Technical Advisor, held a virtual meeting last night with candidates contesting the upcoming GJA national and regional elections.

The interactive session aimed to provide clarity on critical elements of the electoral process, particularly the introduction and operationalisation of proxy voting, which is being implemented in this year’s GJA election under strengthened safeguards and best practices.

The Technical Advisor led participants through the details of the proxy application and voting process, outlining the rigorous eligibility verification and secure digital systems now in place. This reform offers a legitimate voting alternative for a limited number of eligible members who are unable to cast their ballots in person for verifiable reasons.

A Deliberate and Transparent Innovation

Addressing the session, the Elections Committee Chair, Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko, underscored that the decision to introduce proxy voting was taken after careful consideration and is consistent with globally accepted electoral standards. He noted that although proxy voting was contemplated during the last GJA elections—where he served as Secretary—it could not be implemented due to infrastructural gaps and leadership transitions at the time.

“This year, we have made significant progress. A secure platform has been established, standardised forms are being used, and only applicants who meet strict eligibility criteria are benefiting from this facility,” he stated. Currently, 20 voters have been granted proxy status, following due diligence. There 4 more that are awaiting final confirmation.

Absence of Petitioners Noted

Regrettably, the petitioners who raised concerns about proxy voting were absent from the meeting. Their non-participation denied them a valuable opportunity to raise questions or seek clarifications directly from the Elections Committee and the Technical Advisor.

Ballot Printing Update and Call for Ethical Conduct

Candidates were also informed of the location for the printing of ballot papers and encouraged to send their representatives to observe the process this morning. This transparency measure is part of broader efforts to ensure a credible and verifiable electoral outcome.

The Elections Committee urges all candidates and stakeholders to continue upholding decorum and ethical standards as campaigning concludes and Election Day—Monday, June 30, 2025—approaches.

“We wish all candidates the very best and trust that the best among them will be duly elected to serve,” Mr. Agbeko added.
