Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, has assured the chiefs of Klikor in the Ketu South Municipality that government is considering the possibility of dividing the municipality due to its vast size and developmental challenges.
He noted that when the appropriate time comes for the President to undertake such an administrative exercise, the proposal to split the municipality will be given due attention.
Under the proposed plan, Klikor and Somé Traditional Areas would form one district, while Aflao would constitute another, enabling more equitable and effective development across the area.
Mr. Gunu gave this assurance in response to an appeal made by Togbui Akpalu Agbali II, Dufia of Klikor-Glidzi, during a courtesy call on Togbui Addo VIII, Paramount Chief and President of the Klikor Traditional Council.
The call formed part of the Minister’s working visit to the Ketu South Municipality on Monday, June 16, 2025.
In his appeal, Togbui Agbali stressed that the current structure of Ketu South hinders development in Klikor and Somé, as most major projects are concentrated in Aflao.
He cited the proposed ultramodern market and a football stadium as examples of infrastructure projects being earmarked for Aflao, to the neglect of other areas.
Togbui Atsu Nuteme VI, speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief, congratulated Mr. Gunu on his appointment and highlighted critical areas where government support is urgently needed in Klikor.
He called for the construction of a new health center, noting that the existing facility is located in a flood-prone zone, making access difficult during heavy rains.
He also emphasised the need for improvements to key roads in the area including Klikor–Kpoglu road (connecting to the Aflao–Ho highway), Klikor–Weta Road, Klikor–Afiadenyigba road, Klikor–Ehi road via Atsiaklorbor
Togbui Nuteme further noted that although Klikor boasts a well-equipped community library, it lacks qualified professional staff. He appealed to the Minister to facilitate the deployment of trained personnel to manage and run the facility.
On economic opportunities, he said Klikor holds significant potential in aquaculture and called on the Minister for technical and financial support to empower the youth and contribute to the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
The chiefs also appealed for the development of the Klikor Senior High Technical School to strengthen education in the area.
In response, Mr. Gunu assured the chiefs that he would liaise with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) to address the staffing needs of the library promptly.
He also pledged to explore ways to support aquaculture initiatives in the area to stimulate job creation and enhance local economic growth.
He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with traditional authorities and all stakeholders to ensure inclusive development across the municipality.
