A devastating windstorm that struck the community of Podoe-Dorfor in the North Tongu District on Friday, June 14, 2025 has displaced 27 households, causing extensive damage to homes and property.
Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister visited the affected community to assess the extent of destruction and coordinate immediate response measures.
He was accompanied by Victoria Amefadzi Doe, the District Chief Executive of North Tongu and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The Minister and his delegation were received by the traditional leader of Podoe, Torgbey Anaaze Kokloko Titriku XIII, who commended the government’s prompt response and appealed for sustained support to aid the recovery process.
Mr Gunu expressed solidarity with the affected families and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering timely relief and long-term recovery assistance.
“We sympathise with all affected residents and assure them that government, through NADMO and the District Assembly, will ensure that emergency support reaches those affected without delay,” the Minister said.
In a related development, Mr James Gunu undertook an assessment tour of flood-affected communities in Sokode, as the recent torrential rains caused significant damage to infrastructure and local livelihoods.
The inspection revealed severe flooding impacts, including the destruction of a local poultry farm where approximately 900 birds were lost.
The incident represents a major economic setback for the farmer and underscores the broader vulnerability of small-scale agricultural enterprises in the face of extreme weather events.
Mr Gunu also visited a critically damaged section of the Sokode-Akrofu road, where gully erosion around a key bridge has rendered the route hazardous for road users. The structural instability poses an urgent threat to transportation and connectivity within the area.
Addressing community members and the media during the visit, the Regional Minister expressed concern over the level of devastation and assured residents of the government’s immediate and long-term commitment to addressing the crisis.
“The scale of destruction witnessed here is deeply concerning. We are engaging relevant agencies, including the Ghana Highway Authority, Department of Feeder Roads and NADMO, to implement emergency interventions and develop sustainable solutions to mitigate future occurrences,” Gunu stated.
Preliminary assessments conducted by NADMO revealed that several homes suffered significant structural damage, with roofing sheets, household items and personal belongings lost to the storm. No fatalities were reported.
Madam Amefadzi noted that the North Tongu District Assembly will also collaborate with NADMO to distribute relief items, including temporary shelter materials, food supplies and other necessities to assist affected households.
The NADMO team has already commenced emergency relief efforts and is expected to provide further support as detailed assessments continue.
Authorities have urged community members to remain calm and vigilant, and assured them that measures are being taken to mitigate future occurrences through community sensitisation and disaster preparedness initiatives.
