A Chief Inspector with the Ghana Police Service, Michael Amaning, is among six individuals facing serious criminal charges for their alleged involvement in a robbery ring operating in the Greater Accra Region.
The accused appeared before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit at the Circuit Court in Accra, where the court refused to grant bail to most of the accused, remanding them into police custody.
The accused are A1: Kingsford Nketiah, a loading boy, A2: Alfred Agyemang, a plumber, A3: Valikem Nukunu Agbemava, a businessman, A4: Andrews Kwaku Akomeah, alias Andrews Oheneba Charles, a businessman, A5: Chief Inspector Michael Amaning, a police officer and
A6: Kutodji Manya, a mechanic.
They face five counts, including conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, possession of forged official documents, defrauding by false pretence, and abetment to commit robbery.
Robbery at Gunpoint
According to court documents, on May 31, 2025 Kingsford Nketiah and Alfred Agyemang, in the company of Agbemava and Nana Yaw (still at large) attacked Roland Esinu Tamaklo at gunpoint at Amasaman and made away with his unregistered Hyundai Sonata.
The victim was briefly held hostage before being abandoned along the Ashalaja-Kasoa road. Police intelligence intercepted the vehicle shortly after arresting Nketiah.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Agyemang on June 2, 2025.
Police Weapon Used
Investigators allege that Chief Inspector Amaning and mechanic Kutodji Manya provided the pistol used in the robbery. The prosecution states that the weapon was instrumental in both the May 31 attack and a previously aborted carjacking involving Agyemang and Nana Yaw.
Investigators also uncovered a car fraud scheme allegedly run by Agyemang, Agbemava, and Akomeah.
The trio is accused of selling a Toyota Corolla with forged documents to an unsuspecting buyer for GH¢80,000. After the sale, a car rental garage believed to be in collusion reportedly tracked and repossessed the vehicle, defrauding the buyer.
Court Proceedings
All accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. Initially, all six were denied bail, with the judge citing the seriousness of the offenses and the ongoing nature of investigations.
On a subsequent court date, A3 (Valikem Nukunu Agbemava) was granted bail in the amount of GH¢90,000 with five sureties, two of whom must be justified public servants earning not less than GH¢3,000 and residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
He is also required to deposit his Ghana Card with the court and report to the police weekly.
However, A2 (Alfred Agyemang) was once again denied bail, with the court invoking Section 96(5)(b) of the Criminal Procedure Code due to the gravity of the offenses and pending investigations.
The case has been adjourned to June 23, 2025, as investigators continue to pursue leads and search for additional suspects, including Nana Yaw and other potential accomplices.
