Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when nominations are opened by the party.
Addressing Ghanaians through a press release issued on Wednesday, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, said his decision is rooted in a lifelong commitment to service, party loyalty and a desire to drive transformational leadership based on discipline, data and dignity.
“With humility, conviction and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he wrote.
The former Education Minister, known for championing STEM education and education reforms in Ghana, emphasised that his decision is not made in isolation, but in response to growing calls from party members, religious leaders, youth groups and ordinary citizens across the country for a new kind of leadership, one that is results-oriented, compassionate and grounded in experience.
“This is a response to a lifelong call, a call to serve my party and my country with integrity, vision and results. It is also a response to the many voices… who believe that now is the time for a new kind of leadership,” Dr. Adutwum noted.
Recounting his political journey, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum recalled his days as Vice Chairman of the NPP in California, where he mobilised resources to support the party’s electoral victories in Ghana.
His contribution, he said, was fuelled by deep loyalty and a commitment to Ghana’s democratic growth.
“When the then-candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, extended a call for me to return, not just as a party executive, but as a visionary in education, I accepted without hesitation,” he recalled.
Dr. Adutwum left behind a successful educational career in the United States, where he had founded and led high-performing STEM-focused high schools in Los Angeles, to return home and contribute to the transformation of Ghana’s education system.
Under his leadership, Ghana has witnessed the expansion of STEM infrastructure, curriculum reform and policies aimed at making education accessible and globally competitive.
Declaring that Ghana stands at a critical juncture, the former Education Minister stressed the need for a new transformational architecture that meets the demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
His vision centers on quality education for all, meaningful jobs for the youth, inclusive development and a decisive fight against poverty.
“I believe in a Ghana where every child, regardless of background, receives quality education; all youth have access to opportunity and meaningful work; every citizen, from farmer to entrepreneur, has a stake in our shared future; and we would wage war against poverty and win,” he declared.
The minister positioned himself as a servant leader, committed to building a Ghana that works for all. “This declaration is, above all, a call to action to every Ghanaian who dares to believe that our country can be better, stronger, and more united,” he said.
Dr. Adutwum’s message was both emotional and inspirational. In concluding, he made a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to join him in this vision for a better Ghana, one built on evidence-based leadership and shared national purpose.
“We need to rewrite the nation’s transformation architecture to meet the needs of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Let us rise together with discipline, data, and dignity to build the Ghana we deserve,” he urged.
