Authorities and the Parents Teachers Association of the Ghana Lebanon Islamic Secondary School in Accra, have called on the National Security and major stakeholders, including the Inspector General of Police, Ghana Education Service, Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, GRIDCo, Ghana Railways Authority and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to take immediate steps to halt the chaotic and illegal development of a parcel of land close to the school.

The management of the school claims that, besides the emergence of a slum close to the school premises, the situation poses a danger to the safety and well-being of students and teachers and the immediate community.
The Parents Teachers Association believe that with the combined efforts of stakeholders, the situation can be brought under control and further suggested the squatters must be relocated as a matter of urgency to restore a safe learning environment.
The school community is worried that the proximity of the emerging slum is likely to expose the students to various social vices including drugs, theft and other criminal activities and adversely affect a conductive learning environment and the status of the school as a beacon of hope for many students seeking quality education.

The appeal by the school management is a follow-up to a similar petition last January for the National Security, GES and AMA to come to the rescue of the school.
Messrs Abdul Raheem Muhammed and Ahmed Khamis, both members of the local PTA, who raised grave concerns about the development at a press conference in Accra yesterday, said the slum has become a haven for illicit activities, which could easily spill over into the school and pose as threat to national security.
Unfortunately, attempts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Regional Security Council to intervene were resisted with threats, making it difficult for authorities to take decisive action.
The squatters seem unrestrained and still carrying out their activities with impunity hence the concerns of the school authorities.

Abdul Raheem Muhammed and Ahmed Khamis have called on major stakeholders and concerned authorities including the National Security, the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and other relevant bodies who have the responsibility to ensure that students learn in a safe and secure environment, to swiftly address the situation before the students behaviours are influenced.
The PTA is worried because some parents are threatening to transfer their children to other schools to ensure their safety if nothing is done about the current situation.
The concerned PTA members said Teachers and other staff members are concerned about their safety and have expressed fears about working in an environment where security is compromised.
“The presence of the slum has created an atmosphere of anxiety, making it difficult for teachers to focus on their core mandate of imparting knowledge”, a parent complained.
