I will always say that the survival of democracy in Ghana will depend on how the Mahama administration, manages affairs of this country and how principled his appointees are. Should Ghanaians view the NDC government, worse than the previous NPP regime, probably, there could be mass civil unrest and attack on our democracy. I am in no way suggesting that government may not change hands. It is what the NDC said and did in opposition, that could haunt them to electoral defeat. The loose mouths in the NDC could hurt the party’s chances.
In June 2020, the then Bono Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC, Efo Worlanyo Tsekpo, offered himself to be castrated if the Electoral Commission was able to compile a new voters’ register. This loose-mouth did not only become one of the first to rush to be registered as a voter, but as a registered voter he is now the NDC MP for Hohoe Constituency. Can such a person be trusted to be principled enough to lead his constituents? How many people did he convinced and led astray not to register while he went to register?
Then, came the issue of the former president travelling by private jet. Suddenly, Ghana was in a turbulence of cacophony coming from the then opposition NDC, where Ghanaians were made to understand that Nana Addo was fleecing the tax-payers’ money in royal enjoyment and privileges of flying in specially designed airplanes with jacuzzi baths and a state-of-the-art massage parlor. There were top class bar/grill and restaurant which makes Kempemski’s look like blue kiosk and lorry-park chop bar.
We were made to understand that these special jets have master bedroom with a bed, thrice the size of a king-size bed. Then we were shown selfies of some beautiful women on the bed. We thought Nana Addo had converted to Catholicism for he was ‘blessed among women.’
In a nutshell we were made to understand that everything in the plane was out of this world, and like a suburb in Heaven. But of course, the plane flies close to Heaven.
Hon Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, gave many accounts and how much it was costing our God blessed homeland called Ghana.
The MP, expressed deep pain about how funds that could be used to build, like ten SHS blocks, were used to sponsor unnecessary trips of the president. In tears, he made a vow. Unwise as he was, Hon Ablakwa, forgot that it is unwise to talk when you are on either side of two extremes, like very sad and very happy.
Showing how he felt about waste of resources he wept on television and swore an oath that should the NDC return to power and he is given an appointment, he will resign immediately the president or his vice, steps into a private jet, even if they are just going to look at what is inside of that kind of plane and not intending to fly within the Accra airspace.
The NDC returned to power on January 7, 2025 and because of his knowledge and skills in international matters, Okudzeto Ablakwa, landed the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs and while in office he became the first Ghanaian after Cardinal Peter Tuckson to shake hands with Pope Leo XIV.
Then it happened. As if President John Mahama never heard, Ablakwa at his propaganda worse, when he was attacking H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo for his reckless spending on private jets, and certainly, never heard of the oath his foreign minister had sworn to God Almighty and all the gods of our land, he put aside our Presidential Jet and hired or chartered the services of a private jet, VistaJet, to bring down his vice, H.E. Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang from London.
Now every patriotic and well-meaning Ghanaian is tuning into radio or television stations just for the news that Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had been principled enough and resigned from government.
With headquarters in Luqa, Malta, VistaJet, originally air Executive, was founded in 2004, by Thomas Flohr and runs a fleet of 360 Bombardier business jet planes as at 2023. It charges hourly and the charges range between $18,000.00 to $25,000.00 an hour. Looking at the sleekness of the jet, it will not be surprising that it cost Ghana, a cool, $162,500.00 (GH¢1,792,375.00).
The excuse that the Presidential Jet is at repairs is neither here nor there. I am surprised that Daasebre Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, could make such a statement. The vice president could have flown commercial in first or business class.
Ghanaians will continuously ask when Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is stepping down and this can be used against the NDC in 2028.
Seriously, loose mouths in the ruling party can be a liability to the nation in general and the party in particular. Sensationists as Ghanaians generally are, any loose talk is accepted as the truth. The backlash is when the loose-mouth is found not to be principled, because he may either do what he criticized or support it.
A person with a loose mouth is simply someone who talks a lot, often without thinking about what they’re saying or the potential consequences. And a tight-mouth is someone who is reluctant to speak or unwilling to reveal information. Once the mouth is loosened, it is very impossible to tie it up.
