The Circuit Court in Dansoman has granted bail to Tefle-Tetteh Oscar, a 28-year-old self-employed resident of Ada Foah, who is standing trial for attempting to smuggle cocoa beans from Ghana to Togo.
Presiding over the case, Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit ruled that the accused be granted bail in the sum of GH¢90,000 with three sureties, all of whom must be justified.
As part of the bail conditions, Tefle-Tetteh is to deposit his Ghana Card with the registry of the court and report to the police every two weeks until further notice.
Oscar has pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempting to export cocoa beans without lawful authority, contrary to Section 317(1)(g) of Act 29/1960.
According to court documents, on May 14, 2025 police officers from the National Police Intelligence Directorate, in collaboration with personnel from the Ghana Cocoa Board, conducted an intelligence-led operation in Ada Foah following reports of illegal cocoa bean smuggling activities.
During the operation, the accused was allegedly found with 28 bags of cocoa beans, valued at GH¢87,000 concealed in a house believed to be his property.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, was directed by the court to file all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the next hearing. The case has been adjourned to July 14, 2025.
The Ghana Cocoa Board and law enforcement agencies have in recent months intensified operations against illegal cocoa exports, which they say threaten the integrity and economy of the country’s cocoa sector.
