Four employees of Pziram Eye Clinic at Baatsonaa, Spintex, have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and stealing when they appeared before the Circuit Court in Accra, presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah.
The accused — Charles Ofoe Akunor, a nurse; Samuel Kutorglo and Anita Ayoni, both frontline health workers; and Alyse Deasi Amenyedzi, a cashier — were charged with two counts: conspiracy to commit a crime, and stealing, both contrary to provisions of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
They were remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear in court on Monday, May 19, 2025.
According to Chief Inspector Daniel Appiah-Ofori, who led the prosecution, the incident occurred on January 2, 2025, at the Spintex-based facility, where all four accused persons worked.
The prosecution alleged that the staff acted together to dishonestly appropriate GH¢475,000.00 — funds belonging to Dr. Charles Mensah, an ophthalmologist and the clinic’s CEO.
Brief facts presented in court indicate that Dr. Mensah detected inconsistencies in the clinic’s financial records after patient payments failed to reflect in both the merchant and bank accounts.
An internal audit covering the period from January 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025, revealed the missing amount.
When confronted, the accused persons initially denied any knowledge of the missing funds. However, following a police complaint filed on January 22, 2025, the four were arrested and reportedly admitted in their respective cautioned statements — made in the presence of an independent witness — to having taken various amounts of money.
Charles Ofoe allegedly admitted to taking GH¢3,500, while Samuel Kutorglo claimed GH¢4,000 went missing from his drawer. Alyse Amenyedzi confessed to appropriating GH¢1,600, citing economic hardship, and Anita Ayoni said she took GH¢2,000 to settle a debt.
Despite their individual admissions, the prosecution maintains that the total amount misappropriated is GH¢475,000.00. The case has since been adjourned to allow for further proceedings.
