AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has organized Safety Awards and Motivation Night for its workers as a way of motivating them to work.
The programme, which was part of weeklong activities to mark safety on the mine saw over 60 employees and 40 companies and contractors taking various prizes for excelling in their various fields of operation.

Speaking to newsmen on the essence of the night’s programme, Mr. Joe Steve Annan, Senior Manager Health and Safety of AGA, noted that management of the company needed to motivate the entire workforce for them to work safely, so that at the end of the day they will go home to meet their families, hence the observation of the Safety Week.
He described safety as the fulcrum around which all operations and activities revolve and stated that if one privatises safety, one ensures workers safety.
Mr. Annan said safety on the mine has improved significantly, but was quick to remark, “but we are not complacent, we are still doing what we need to do.”
He described the entire safety programme as unprecedented, explaining that devoting a whole week for a safety programme has never happened in any mining company in Ghana.
The Managing Director of AGA, Mr. Samuel Pobee, on his part congratulated all awardees during the programme.
He noted that Safety was not about processes and procedures, but about human lives and that “whatever we do is about making sure that we all go back home safely to our loved ones and our families.
“We have started our journey to make Obuasi great again and Obuasi cannot be great without safety,” he stated.
The Managing Director further said “we want to deliver safe ounces and that is the aim. If by the end of the year we have achieved our plan it has to be done safely.”
