The Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Baffour Asamoah-Agyei, says President John Dramani Mahama has the key to stopping illegal mining in the country.
He has, therefore, pleaded with the President to act swiftly to halt the menace before “we all descend into the deep pit of no return.”
Speaking at the 28th Annual Synod of the Church at Manso Atwere in the Amansie West District of Ashanti region, Bishop Asamoah-Agyei said the President was the only person who holds the key that can stop galamsey.

According to him, a fiat from the President to the effect that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who oversee galamsey activities in their areas of jurisdiction shall be fired will send a signal to these political heads to sit up and fight to stop the canker.
“I strongly believe that one sentence from the President to these political heads can kill the galamsey menace completely,” he said.
Bishop Asamoah-Agyei believes that the MMDCEs are finding it tough to go through with their appointments and as a result any dismissal message from the President will force them to fight the galamsey menace.
The Methodist Prelate pointed out that, as a country, we do not need a soothsayer or prophet to tell us that we are heading towards a deep pit of no return as our rivers, cocoa and forests are being destroyed with impunity, due to galamsey activities.
The Diocesan Bishop also indicated that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has equal power to help stop galamsey and appealed to him to complement the government in its efforts to tackle the challenge.
“Let Otumfuo come out and say that on any land where galamsey activities will be detected, the Odikro or Chief shall be destooled. If this is strictly carried out as it happened at Sabronum, it will not be long when galamsey in Ashanti will be a thing of the past,” he stated.
Rt. Rev. Asamoah-Agyei expressed the Diocese’s appreciation to the paramount chief of Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah II, for putting up a magnificent Church building for the local Methodist Church.
