President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven Justices of the Court of Appeal for consideration and possible elevation to the Supreme Court of Ghana, in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution.
In a formal communication addressed to the Acting Chief Justice and the Judicial Council, the President expressed confidence in the nominees and urged the Council to expedite their consideration.
The justices nominated are Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.
The others are Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
The press release announcing their nomination also attached their Curricula Vitae for the consideration of the Council of State, stating “I trust that the Council will expedite action on their considerations.”
If considered, the appointments will strengthen the apex court’s capacity to handle a growing caseload and reinforce judicial independence and efficiency in the administration of justice in Ghana.
Parliament, after this first step, is expected to vet and approve the nominees before the president will swear them into office.
This development comes at a time when the judiciary is under increasing public scrutiny, with calls for transparency, fairness, and timely delivery of justice across the country.
