Kelvin Nii Quartey, a 22-year-old mason, widely known in the Gbawe area as “War Leader”, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court on multiple serious criminal charges, including abetment of escape from lawful custody, causing harm, use of offensive weapon, unlawful damage and threat of death.
Appearing before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa, Kelvin Nii Quartey pleaded not guilty to all five counts and was remanded into police custody. The case has been adjourned to May 2, 2025, as investigations continue.
According to prosecution led by Chief Inspector Emelia Mensah, on August 5, 2024 Kelvin Nii Quartey aided the escape of a suspect, known as “Tension @ Large”, from the Gbawe North Police Station.
Armed with a machete, Nii Quartey allegedly attacked one Emmanuel Mills — inflicting a deep head wound — and damaged police property in the process.
He is also accused of threatening to kill Mills during the violent confrontation, which occurred in the presence of officers.
Nii Quartey had reportedly been on the run since the incident, but was apprehended by police on April 3, 2025, at a hideout. During interrogation, he confessed to the offences and promised to assist police in recapturing his accomplice, but later failed to do so.
Parallel Case: Joseph Dodoo Also Remanded
In a related courtroom development, 40-year-old businessman Joseph Dodoo, alias “Ashalley”, also appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court in connection with a land dispute-turned-shooting at Domeabra. He pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and causing harm.
Prosecutor Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder told the court that on April 22, 2025, Dodoo allegedly led a group from Danchira to confront another party over a disputed piece of land.
The confrontation escalated, resulting in the shooting of 24-year-old Emmanuel Aryee, who sustained a bullet wound to the thigh. Aryee was treated and discharged from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Dodoo has been remanded and is scheduled to reappear in court on May 12, 2025.
Both cases remain under investigation as police continue efforts to arrest accomplices and uncover the full extent of the incidents.
