Residents of New Kordiabe in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Eastern Region are appealing to the government to urgently strengthen security in the area to protect them from the growing threat of landguards.
The residents say the presence and activities of these landguards pose a serious risk to their lives and safety, prompting calls for immediate government action.
Speaking at a recent press conference in the community, Chairman of the New Kordiabe Landlords Association, Joseph Akamah, told journalists that some of the residents have been forced to abandon their daily routines out of fear.
He alleged that these thugs are hired by unknown individuals who do not have their welfare at heart, to disrupt the peace of the community by constantly harassing residents in multiple ways.
He called on the Member of Parliament for the area and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, the Minister for the Interior, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), President John Dramani Mahama and other relevant authorities to intervene before the situation worsens.
“We have the strength to confront these armed individuals but we are restrained by our respect for the law. We do not want to take matters into our own hands,” Mr. Joseph Akamah stated.
He described the activities of the landguards as a threat to the safety and wellbeing of law-abiding citizens, adding that several schools in the area have shut down due to frequent gunfire within the New Kordiabe township.
