Former France international Samir Nasri has strongly criticised the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following its controversial decision to award Morocco a 3-0 victory over Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
The ruling, delivered by the CAF Appeal Committee after Senegal were deemed to have forfeited the match by walking off the pitch, continues to generate intense debate across the global football community.
Nasri, speaking in reaction to the decision, did not hold back in his assessment, describing the situation as chaotic and poorly handled.
“Next time, they might as well announce it in 2035 too. This is nonsense,” he said. “The Senegal players already went home with the trophy to celebrate! So what do we do now? Give the trophy to Morocco?”
The former midfielder’s comments highlight the confusion surrounding the aftermath of the final, particularly regarding the symbolic and logistical implications of CAF’s ruling.
His remarks also echo growing criticism from players, pundits, and stakeholders who believe the situation has undermined the credibility of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nasri went further to accuse CAF of damaging its own image on the global stage.
“The Confederation of African Football is making a complete fool of itself,” he added.
The controversy stems from the dramatic conclusion of the AFCON 2025 final, which has now shifted from an on-pitch contest to a boardroom decision. While CAF maintains that its ruling follows disciplinary regulations, critics argue that the delayed verdict and its consequences have created unnecessary confusion and embarrassment.
With Senegal having already celebrated what they believed was a title victory, CAF now faces the delicate task of managing the fallout - both in terms of optics and restoring trust in its decision-making processes.
As reactions continue to pour in, the incident is fast becoming one of the most contentious moments in AFCON history, raising serious questions about governance, communication, and the integrity of African football’s flagship competition.
