Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has declared that the days of celebrating mere participation are over, insisting his team must raise their level at the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking to FIFA ahead of their second-ever global tournament appearance, the Danish-Spanish tactician made clear that Panama's ambitions have evolved.
"It's time for us to up our game," he stated.
Christiansen, the longest-serving coach in Panama's history, believes his side has progressed beyond simply being grateful for qualification. He pointed to recent results against regional rivals as evidence that they can compete with established football nations.
"Over the last five years, we've managed to hold our own against the big boys, and we're no longer outclassed by Canada, Mexico and the USA. We've come out on top against the USA several times."
That confidence will be tested in Group H, where Panama face Ghana, Croatia, and England. Christiansen acknowledged the quality of their opponents but refused to accept a passive role.
"We know they're tricky customers, but we want to go toe-to-toe with them and put Panama on the map."
He also challenged fans to expect more than moral victories.
"Scoring a consolation goal should no longer be a reason for Panamanians to celebrate."
Panama open their campaign against Ghana, with Christiansen demanding a performance that reflects their growth.
