Algeria stormed to a strong finish in the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday, defeating Equatorial Guinea 3-1 to top Group E.
The Desert Foxes set the tone early and took the lead in the 19th minute when Zineddine Belaid rose highest to meet a perfectly delivered corner kick, powering a bullet header from around the penalty spot into the left post and beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Algeria doubled their advantage six minutes later through Fares Chaibi, who produced a moment of individual brilliance. The winger weaved his way into the box before unleashing a superb strike that flew under the crossbar, leaving goalkeeper Jesus Owono rooted to the spot.
The pressure continued, and Algeria’s dominance was rewarded again in the 32nd minute. Ibrahim Maza connected brilliantly with a cross to make it 3-0 before the break.
Equatorial Guinea pulled one back early in the second half through Emilio Nsue. The experienced forward latched onto a well-weighted pass just outside the box and fired a thunderous effort that struck the top of the post before bouncing into the net in the 50th minute.
Despite the response, Algeria maintained control for the remainder of the match to seal a deserved win.
With three wins from three matches, Algeria earned nine points to advance into the Round 16 stage
