Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has expressed disappointment with the officiating in his team’s 1-1 draw against Ulinzi Stars in Sunday’s Kenyan Premier League clash at the Kasarani Stadium.
The Ghanaian tactician felt several key decisions went against his side in a match that denied the record 21-time champions a chance to go top of the table.
“I was not happy with the officiating today. There were a few situations that could have gone in our favour,” Akonnor told reporters after the match.
“Sometimes it’s like that; we just have to accept it and move on.”
Gor Mahia started brightly, taking the lead in the sixth minute when Felix Oluoch sneaked in at the far post to tap home from close range.
However, Ulinzi Stars, buoyed by their resilience, levelled through Boniface Muchiri, whose precise low shot beat goalkeeper Byrne Omondi after a swift counterattack.
The equaliser rewarded the visitors’ spirited performance under coach Stephen Ocholla, whose team had managed only one win in seven previous league games.
Akonnor admitted that his side’s intensity dipped after their early lead, allowing Ulinzi to grow in confidence.
“This time around we didn’t really do what we ought to do in terms of compactness, pressing, and counter-pressing,” the former Asante Kotoko coach explained.
“We allowed them to play, and that can be dangerous because it gives opponents belief they can win.”
The result keeps Gor Mahia in second place on the league table, one point behind leaders Kakamega Homeboyz, who also drew 1-1 with Tusker earlier on Sunday.
