Dutch-Ghanaian striker Brian Brobbey marked his presence with a cool finish as Sunderland Under-21s twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Anderlecht in their Premier League International Cup opener at the Stadium of Light.
Anthony Patterson, Luke O'Nien, Harrison Jones, Brobbey and Eliezer Mayenda all started as Graeme Murty’s side blended youth and experience. Archie Lightfoot was named at full-back, while Ben Middlemas captained the team from midfield.
Anderlecht struck early after Lightfoot was penalised for handball. Patterson saved Ntanda Samuel’s penalty, but the forward pounced on the rebound to give the visitors the lead.
Sunderland responded swiftly, levelling just seven minutes later as Jones played a clever pass through for Brobbey, who finished clinically into the bottom corner.
Joshua Bethuna’s thunderous 25-yard strike restored Anderlecht’s lead before half-time.
The Black Cats pressed after the restart and were rewarded when Jack Whittaker’s late assist set up Timur Tutierov to calmly equalise.
Sunderland U-21 held firm for a well-deserved point and now shift focus to Nottingham Forest, with Brobbey expected in the first-team squad against Everton on November 3.
