Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has called for gender equality in athlete remuneration, insisting that female athletes deserve the same pay as their male counterparts.
Speaking to Joy Sports amid the Black Queens’ protest over unpaid bonuses, the Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP said gender should not determine how much athletes earn.
“I think we need to treat all athletes equally, irrespective of gender,” he said. “I even hold the view, it may be controversial, but I think we should be paying equal wages to both men and women athletes.”
The Black Queens returned to training on Monday after boycotting sessions for two days over unpaid bonuses following their bronze-winning campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Each player was reportedly owed $9,500.
Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged that the delay in payments was unacceptable but assured that the government was working to resolve the issue.
“Delays are not desirable, of course, and I think we should take steps going forward to ensure that it does not recur,” he added.
The players have since received their payments after qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with a 7-0 aggregate victory over Egypt.
