Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has opened up about his excitement after joining Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir, describing the move as a major step forward in his career.
The former Fulham centre-back joined the Turkish side on transfer deadline day in 2024 from Portuguese side Arouca and has since established himself as one of their key players in defence. He has made 89 appearances for the club, scoring seven and assisting five.
“I was ecstatic when I found out I was going to İstanbul BaÅakÅehir. I remember it was the last day of the summer window, so I was just at my brother's house and my family was around, and once I got the green light from my agent that we could travel, I packed my bags quickly and we got on that plane,” Opoku told RG.
“Since then, Basaksehir has been my home. The club is amazing, the people there and my teammates, it’s just been a whole different level from the previous team I was at, so yeah, we just thank God for that, honestly.”
The 27-year-old has grown into an important figure for the Turkish side, making over 30 appearances last season. His strong performances have also cemented his place in Ghana’s setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
