Black Stars coach Otto Addo says he is delighted to have justified the Ghana Football Association’s decision to retain him after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Addo came under intense public criticism following Ghana’s inability to reach the continental tournament for the first time in 21 years.
Many fans and pundits questioned his tactical approach, while Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams described him as 'lucky' during the World Cup qualifiers.
However, Addo responded to his critics by leading the Black Stars to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, winning seven of the eight qualifiers he took charge of.
His success has been seen as vindication for the Ghana Football Association’s decision to stand by him amid the calls for his dismissal.
Reflecting on the journey, Addo expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
“Personally, I was happy I was maintained [after failing to qualify for the AFCON] and very happy I could deliver [World Cup] qualification,” he told Joy Sports.
Addo is now focused on preparing his side for next year’s global tournament, where Ghana will aim to make a strong impression on the world stage.
