Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer has backed Benjamin Asare to remain Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, insisting that the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper earned his place purely on merit.
Asare has been instrumental in Ghana’s successful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, keeping multiple clean sheets and providing stability between the posts. However, sections of the public have questioned his readiness for football’s biggest stage, arguing that he has not been tested enough at the highest level.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Schaefer said the coaching staff’s decision was based on performance and not sentiment.
"We watched matches, and we said we need a goalkeeper, and it was Benjamin Asare," Schaefer stated. "But we have to compliment the goalkeeper’s coach, Fatau Dauda, for the work he’s done."
Asare is expected to make the squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, though his position as Ghana’s undisputed number one will depend on form and competition leading up to the tournament.
The Black Stars will discover their group stage opponents on December 5, 2025, when the World Cup draw is held in Washington, D.C.
