The Black Stars of Ghana are set to take on Comoros in a showdown on Sunday night in their final push in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The game carries extra emotion for Ghanaians, as the Black Stars aim not only to book their ticket to the global showpiece but also to avenge past defeats against the Islanders.
Comoros stunned Ghana twice in recent years, a 3-2 win at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and a 1-0 victory during the second round of the ongoing qualifiers.
Otto Addo’s men, however, head into the clash full of confidence after a dominant 5-0 triumph over the Central African Republic in their previous outing.
With qualification within reach, the Black Stars players and technical team are keen on ending the campaign on a high note and giving Ghanaians a reason to celebrate.
Speaking ahead of the match, head coach Otto Addo stressed the importance of approaching the game with full commitment and respect for their opponents.
“I don't know how the approach was when I was not there so It's difficult for me to talk about it. But I can say from my point of view or from our point of view, we take them very, very serious,” Otto Addo told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Saturday.
The Ghana coach continued, “Like I said, Comoros, some people don't even know where it is. But I know where it is. And it's a small country, but we have to show them big respect for what they have done in the recent years in building a team, naturalising a lot of players from France, building a really competitive team and with a really, really good coach who understands the game, who always has a good game plan, who is flexible, who plays with different systems. They are difficult to beat. It's going to be a tough match for me. But we want to win.”
Ghana have been one of the standout teams in the African qualifiers, recording seven wins, one draw, and just one defeat in nine matches.
Playing at home, they are widely expected to rise to the occasion once more and complete their mission in front of thousands of passionate supporters.
For Comoros, the match presents a chance to finish their campaign with pride, but the pressure will be on the Black Stars, who know that victory will secure a fifth World Cup appearance.
With tickets for the game sold in record time, the nation is expected to unite to rally the Black Stars to victory in their final push to the World Cup.
Tonight’s encounter is scheduled to kick off at 7 pm at Accra Sports Stadium.
