Former Ghana Football Association Vice President Fred Pappoe has mounted a strong defense of goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, telling critics the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper is "doing the job" he was assigned in the World Cup qualifiers.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper has faced scrutiny despite keeping five clean sheets in as many qualifying matches, with some questioning the quality of opposition he has faced.
"I don't know why people are making an issue of it," Pappoe stated in an interview with Citi Sports. "The man has been given a job to do, and he - Benjamin Asare - is doing the job, so what is our point?"
Pappoe emphasised that Asare has perfectly fulfilled his primary responsibility, noting "We put him into the goalpost to make sure we don't have balls entering our net...and he is doing just that. It's not a call we should be making now."
The former GFA official's comments come as Ghana prepares for their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros, with Asare expected to start in goal as the Black Stars need just one point to secure World Cup qualification.
