Black Starlets head coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum praised his team’s resilience and discipline after their 1-1 draw with Togo in the opening game of the WAFU Zone B U17 Boys Championship in Yamoussoukro on Sunday.
Ghana’s task became more difficult when defender Gabriel Denyinah was sent off just two minutes into the match. However, the Starlets responded positively, taking the lead in the ninth minute through captain Joseph Narbi, who finished off a fine cross from Mark Aboagye. Togo restored parity in the second half when Sultan Ganiou converted from the penalty spot, but Ghana stayed compact to see out the result.
Dr Ogum was full of praise for his young side’s response to adversity. “Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for almost the entire match, they played to my instructions and showed discipline. That is the mentality we want to build in this team,” he said.
He also singled out captain Narbi, who was named Man of the Match, for his leadership and quality. “Joseph showed great character today. His goal and overall contribution inspired the rest of the team,” Ogum added.
Ghana face hosts Ivory Coast next on Tuesday, with confidence high after their spirited display.
