The University for Development Studies (UDS) has made history in Dalian, China, by becoming the first African university to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Universities World Football Tournament.
The Ghanaian side achieved the feat with a commanding 4â1 victory over Spain’s Ramon Llull University, a result that sealed their place in the last eight with two wins from two matches.
Alhassan Zakaria led the way with a clinical brace, while Ezideen and Ibrahim Saani added further goals to complete a performance that showcased UDS’s attacking flair and resilience.
The emphatic win has not only boosted the team’s confidence but also placed Ghana and Africa firmly on the global university football map.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko praised the players’ determination and described the achievement as a collective triumph for the continent.
“This is not just a win for UDS. It’s a win for Ghana, for Africa, and for every young player dreaming of showing their talent on the world stage,” he said after the match.
With their sights now firmly set on the quarterfinals, UDS will look to continue their fairytale run in China as they seek to inspire the next generation of African student-athletes on the world stage.
