Ghanaian-born midfielder Samuel Mawuena Gidi has received his first invite to the U21 national team of Slovakia ahead of the Euro U21 qualifiers in September.
The newly-signed FC Cincinnati midfielder completed his nationality switch in 2025 and has now been included in coach Jaroslav Kentos' squad for the matches against Andorra and Malta next month.
Coach Kentos disclosed that the Slovakian federation have been monitoring the Ghanaian midfielder since the process of his switch started and hence the decision to add him to his team.
"We have been following him for a long time, since the time when there was a possibility that he would receive Slovak citizenship, we observe him in detail and we know his performance. I am glad that everything came to a successful end and he will be part of our team," he said, as quoted by the Slovakian Football Federation website.
Gidi spent most of his career abroad in Slovakia, where he made over 100 appearances for topflight side MSK Zilina.
The 21-year-old is expected to make his FC Cincinnati debut against Philadelphia Union in the Major League Soccer on Saturday, August 30.
