Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu gave Plymouth Argyle a moment to remember on Tuesday night, heading home just before half-time to keep his side alive in the EFL Cup clash with Swansea City.
The English-Ghanaian defender not only found the net but also put in a commanding display, lasting the full game and winning the hearts of the travelling Argyle fans.
Swansea had drawn first blood through Zan Vipotnik’s powerful strike in the 22nd minute, but Sarpong-Wiredu’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time gave Plymouth hope. From there, the tie remained finely balanced, with both sides creating chances but failing to find a breakthrough.
The contest was ultimately decided by penalties at the Swansea.com Stadium. Argyle battled hard, but it was the Swans who held their nerve, winning 5-3 in the shootout with Melker Widell slotting home the decisive kick.
Despite the heartbreak, Argyle fans will take pride in Sarpong-Wiredu’s performance. Plymouth now shift focus to their League One meeting with Cardiff City on August 30.
