Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Sports Committee, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has alleged that President John Mahama's donation to the Black Queens for their 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) heroics was less than $40,000.
The Queens, for the first time since 2016, clinched a bronze medal at the tournament, which recently concluded in Morocco.
Following the team's arrival, the Minority Caucus in Parliament donated GHC100,000 to the team.
After that, President Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang hosted the players, and an undisclosed amount was donated to the team.
However, speaking on Asempa FM, the Member of Tafo Constituency questioned the transparency and actual value of Mahama’s gesture, claiming the amount given to the team was significantly lower than widely believed.
“I challenge President Mahama that the money he gave to the Black Queens is less than 40,000 dollars,” he alleged.
Despite failing to win the ultimate, the GFA, Ministry of Sports, and Parliament have all recently applauded the Queens’ efforts and called for increased investment in the women’s game.
