Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Ofei has reaffirmed his teams determination to restore pride and prove their quality as they gear up for the 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Championship.
Following a disappointing campaign in the Africa U20 Cup of Nations and the teams failure to qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup, the Black Satellites are eager to make a strong statement on home soil.
Ghana kicks off its Group A campaign with a high-profile clash against arch-rivals Nigeria on Thursday, July 10, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 GMT.
Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated encounter, Coach Ofei emphasized the significance of the tournament in rewriting the teams narrative and rebuilding national confidence in the squad.
We still have something to prove, especially after our exit from the AFCON and our inability to qualify for the World Cup, Ofei stated. We need to prove to the nation that this squad is a very good team.
The Black Satellites will benefit from home support, but also face the weight of expectations as hosts of the regional competition. Coach Ofei, however, remains unfazed, insisting that the focus is firmly on his own teams performance rather than their opponents.
As a host nation, we dont care who we meet. Whoever comes our way, we just have to show quality and Im pretty sure our boys are ready to fight, he affirmed.
Group A consists of Ghana, Nigeria, and Benin, making every match a must-win in the race for a semi-final berth and a spot at the next Africa U20 Cup of Nations. With preparations in full swing over the past few weeks, Ofei and his technical team have worked on sharpening the teams tactical awareness, boosting morale, and reinforcing team cohesion.
Thursdays opener against Nigeria is not only a battle for early supremacy but a golden opportunity for the Black Satellites to send a clear message, that Ghana remains a formidable force in youth football.
