The Bawku Traditional Council, led by the Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has formally petitioned the government to consider the creation of a new region to serve the Kusaug Traditional Area.
A delegation from the Council, led by Alhaji Mahamudu Azonko, Chief of the Gumbo Divisional Area, presented the petition to Mr Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister, on Friday, at the Regional Coordinating Council.
The delegation also included Alhaji Osman Kasim, Chief in Charge of Environment, and Mr John Abugre, a member of the Kusaug Advisory Council.
Presenting the petition, Alhaji Mahamudu expressed the Council’s hope that the request would receive favourable consideration at the highest level of government.
“It is our hope that the petition will reach the President of the Republic of Ghana for consideration and necessary action,” he said.
Receiving the petition, Mr Akamugri assured the delegation that their request would be promptly transmitted to the President for review.
“We will promptly submit the document to the President. It is our fervent hope that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama will listen to your request,” the Minister stated.
He explained that the creation of new regions serves as an important administrative strategy to enhance governance, improve resource distribution, and accelerate development at the local level.
Mr Akamugri added that establishing a new region for the Kusaug traditional area could help unlock its vast resources, promote equitable growth, and improve the living standards of its people.
The move by the Bawku Traditional Council formed part of ongoing calls by traditional and local authorities as well as residents of the area for the creation of additional administrative region out of the Upper East region to bring governance closer to the people and spur regional development.
