A total of 1,034 out-of-school children in the Sekyere Afram Plains and Sekyere South Districts in the Ashanti Region have been reintegrated into the formal schools system as part of efforts to enhance childhood literacy in Ghana.
The exercise, a gesture by the School for Life and Luminos Fund, comprised 535 males and 499 females under the Complementary Basic Education (CBE) Programme, where beneficiaries were presented with learning kits to aid their studies.
Mr Ibrahim Tanko Yakubu, Sekyere South District, Director of Complementary Education Agency, at a graduation ceremony of the Cohort ‘4’ of CBE/ Second Chance Programme, said no child should be deprived of the right to basic education and commended School for Life and Luminos Fund of complementing the government’s efforts to improving education.
He urged parents to take their wards education seriously, adding that, education was critical for societal development.
Out of the 375 learners enrolled in the Sekyere South District, he stated that, only two could not complete the cycle.
He assured CEA’s resolve to monitor reintegrated learners to ensure retention, while calling on the government and other stakeholders to provide adequate logistics and safe learning environments.
Mr. Aaron Odua-Mensah, Field Coordinator for the CBE/SC Project, described the transitioning and reintegrating of 1034 out-of-school children?back to formal school as “no mean feat,” attributing it to the hard work of all stakeholders.
He cautioned parents against engaging children in early farming which reduced children’s interest in schooling, while calling on the government to address inadequate furniture challenges to help young ones stay in school.
Mr. Odua-Mensah reaffirmed the project’s commitment to ensuring that no child of school-going age was left behind.
Mr Edward Asare, an officer from Luminos Fund commended parents, facilitators and communities for supporting the initiative and tasked guardians not to renege on their roles to make sure children stayed in school.
Facilitators for the reintegrated school children were appreciated with certificates of accomplishment and as indication of hard work.
