The Upper East Regional office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has chalked significant operational successes within the first half of 2025, resolving 620 complaints it received.
This figure represents 97.5 per cent of the total 636 complaints it received from January to June this year.
According to statistics made available to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga by Mr Seth Kponyo, the Regional Manager of the Commission, the complaints were from aggrieved electricity and water consumers in the two regions.
Of the total of 636 complaints, 593 were lodged against the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), while 43 were filed against Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
The data added that the Commission helped NEDCo to successfully resolve 580 complaints, while GWL addressed 40 of its 43 complaints, with the remaining 16 cases at various stages of PURC’s complaint management process.
The Regional Manager acknowledged that there were still challenges in the sectors and assured the public of its commitment to helping the service providers to meeting the needs and interest of the consumers.
Through the intervention and supervision of the PURC, he said, five transformers and nine faulty poles were replaced within the period under review (January to June 2025).
“In addition, the Commission passed GH¢385.01 as adjustment to a customer of GWL following a successful complaint review”, he said.
Established in 2022 in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Office’s operational areas cover both Upper East and North East Regions.
Over the past three and a half years, the Office has played a pivotal role in enhancing regulatory oversight, ensuring utility providers are responsive to customer concerns, and fostering improved relations between service providers and consumers.
The Regional Manager noted that the presence of the Commission in the region has led to greater public awareness about consumer rights and obligations, as well as notable improvements in service delivery and customer engagement.
He reiterated that the PURC remained committed to upholding its mandate of protecting the interests of utility consumers and ensuring efficient service provision in the region.
