The Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) has inaugurated a community water system with a daily supply capacity of 20,000 litres for residents of Bamiankor in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The facility, valued at GH¢230,000, forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at improving access to potable water in its operational areas. The project comes barely three months after a similar water facility was handed over to the Apemanim community in the Ahanta West Municipality.
At a brief ceremony, Mr. Perry Acheampong, Corporate Affairs Manager of GREL, said the initiative reflects the company’s continuous commitment to improving the living standards of people in the 93 host communities in which it operates.
“For us, corporate social responsibility is not a slogan but a responsibility to ensure proper fairness, inclusion and mutual growth in the communities that give us the space and support to thrive,” he stated.
He stressed that access to safe and clean water remains fundamental to health, education and productivity. “Without clean and safe water, communities face unnecessary health risks, children struggle in their schooling and productivity is reduced,” he said.
He added that GREL’s business success is closely linked to the well-being of its host communities, and urged residents to maintain the facility and use it responsibly.
Awulae Angama-Tu Agyan, the Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Area, commended GREL for the intervention, noting that the water project would ease the burden on residents who previously travelled long distances in search of potable water.
He mentioned several development projects initiated by GREL in the Gwira area, including the construction of the Anobil School Block, a toilet facility at Bamiankor, scholarships for Senior High School students, teachers’ quarters and the establishment of Gwiraman Senior High School.
He appealed to GREL to consider providing internship and national service opportunities for school leavers in the area to equip them with employable skills.
He also urged residents to protect GREL’s rubber plantations from illegal mining activities that threaten the company’s operations and the environment.
Nana Kwesi Agyemang IX, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove and Chairman of the Association of Chiefs on Whose Land GREL Operates (ACLANGO), praised the company for its sustained partnership with local communities.
He encouraged residents to unite and support GREL’s developmental initiatives, saying clean water is essential to good health. He further appealed to out-grower farmers to sell their raw rubber to GREL to help boost productivity.
