AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable community development with plans to construct a 24-unit classroom complex at the Obuasi Cluster of Schools – a project that will create one of the largest and most modern basic school facilities in Ghana.
This new development follows the company’s recent delivery of a 9-unit classroom block at Sanso to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and forms part of AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which prioritises access to quality education, healthcare and livelihood empowerment in its host communities.
At a sod-cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction, Community Relations Manager Mr. Edmund Oduro Agyei said this project reflects the company’s purpose statement – Mining to empower people and advance societies.
He further explained that the investment seeks to address infrastructure deficits within the municipality and improve the learning environment for both pupils and teachers.
“The 24-unit classroom block is designed to provide a safe, functional and conducive space that supports effective teaching and learning. Education remains a key pillar in our long-term socio-economic development agenda and we are proud to contribute in shaping the future of Obuasi’s young people,” he highlighted.
The two-storey facility will include sick-bays for male and female pupils, administrative offices for head and assistant head teachers, staff common rooms, kitchenettes, an ICT laboratory, a library, an assembly hall, a cafeteria and modern washroom facilities with 24 toilets – all aimed at improving the quality of basic education infrastructure in Obuasi.
Once completed, the 24-unit classroom complex will expand access to quality education while reinforcing AngloGold Ashanti’s position as a key development partner driving inclusive and sustainable growth in Obuasi.
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Alfred Koomson, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its continued investment in education – noting that the company’s interventions have led to a visible improvement in educational outcomes for the area.
“The consistent support from AngloGold Ashanti – from infrastructure to capacity-building – continues to make a measurable impact on education delivery in the municipality,” he said.
As part of its local content and enterprise development policy, AngloGold Ashanti has awarded the construction contract to two Obuasi-based companies: Kilon Company Ltd. and Erok Ghana Ltd. The project is expected to be completed within 16 months.
