The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), through its Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute (RAMSRI), has launched the 2025 Cancer Awareness campaign at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences in Accra.
The annual initiative, observed in October and November to highlight breast and prostate cancers respectively, is aimed at promoting early detection and treatment. This year’s launch was chaired by the Director of Science, Technology and Innovation at the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Kwamina Quaison, on the theme ‘Screen Today, Live Tomorrow’.
In his address, the Director-General of GAEC, Prof. Samuel Boakye Dampare, noted that cancers, particularly breast and prostate cancers, continue to pose a significant public health burden in Ghana. He revealed that an estimated 27,385 new cancer cases are recorded annually, leading to about 17,944 deaths. Breast cancer remains the most common among women, while prostate cancer is a leading concern for men.
“These statistics underscore the urgent need for greater education, heightened awareness, early detection and effective treatment,” he said.
Citing World Health Organisation (WHO) data, Prof. Dampare added that breast cancer was the second most common cancer worldwide in 2024 with 2.4 million new cases, while prostate cancer ranked fourth with 1.6 million.
He commended RAMSRI, GAEC Hospital and the GAEC Ladies Association for their dedication in leading the campaign over the past three years, and expressed gratitude to sponsors, describing their support as “invaluable”.
Prof. Dampare further disclosed that this year’s campaign will feature a comprehensive series of activities to educate, screen and support those affected by the diseases, stressing the need for year-round commitment to cancer prevention and management.
The Acting Director of RAMSRI, Dr. Theodosia Adom, highlighted achievements from the 2024 campaign, which included community and public engagements as well as free screenings for over 1,500 people. She announced that the 2025 edition will expand the coverage area for breast and prostate cancer screening.
Representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Ghana Girl Guides Association, Ghana Health Service, National Health Insurance Scheme (Ga East), G4S Security, Health Essentials, the University of Ghana Medical School and GAEC management and staff attended the launch.
