GCB Bank PLC has introduced a dedicated savings product, the GCB Hajj Account, designed to help Muslims in Ghana plan and finance their pilgrimage to Mecca.
The account provides prospective pilgrims with a structured savings plan, offering flexible deposit options starting from as little as GH¢50. Customers are exempt from monthly charges and benefit from free e-alerts, e-statements and complementary insurance cover for the journey.
The bank said this new product is aimed at easing the financial burden associated with the Hajj – one of Islam’s most profound spiritual obligations, while giving customers the peace of mind and dignity needed to undertake the trip.
“What GCB has done today is essentially saying, you no longer have to be saving monies with agents. Just open a Hajj account with us, build up your savings, and when it is time for your journey, we will transfer the money directly to your designated Hajj agent,” said Sina Kamagate, Executive Head-Retail Banking, GCB Bank.
On top of this, he added that: We have provided value additions, including embedded insurance at no premium. Coverage includes death, theft and loss of property, giving prospective pilgrims peace of mind”.
According to GCB, the account is open to all Muslims capable of making regular deposits. After returning from the pilgrimage, account holders may either maintain their savings plan, convert it into a standard savings account, or channel residual funds into other GCB investment products.
Management emphasised that the initiative reflects GCB’s commitment to delivering customer-centred financial solutions which align with the religious, cultural and social needs of its diverse client base.
With 184 branches and 340 ATMs nationwide, supported by a suite of digital platforms, GCB remains Ghana’s largest indigenous bank. Established in 1953, it continues to play a pivotal role in supporting individuals, SMEs, corporates and institutions to achieve financial security.
“If customers do not intend to embark on Hajj again, the account can be converted into a standard savings account – allowing them to save toward other goals such as holidays or investments,” he concluded.
