MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a more inclusive digital and business ecosystem for persons with disabilities (PWDs), supporting them to establish and grow sustainable enterprises that promote financial independence and contribute to economic growth.
Speaking at a two-day capacity-building training for PWDs in Tamale organised by InnoHub with support from Fidelity Bank, GIZ and the Department of Labour, Manager in charge of Enterprise Business, MTN Ghana, Madam Adwoa Ackonor said the initiative aligns with MTN’s 2025 Ambition strategy. The strategy emphasises enabling communities, driving digital inclusion and empowering small and medium Enterprises (SMEs) to create jobs and reduce poverty.
“By providing entrepreneurial and digital skills training, we are helping PWDs unlock opportunities to grow their businesses, improve their livelihoods and participate fully in the economy,” she said.
Madam Ackonor added that MTN Ghana is exploring post-programme support, including continuous mentorship, capacity building and linkages to financial institutions and development partners. “The goal is not only to train but also ensure that PWDs have the resources, networks and support to sustain and scale their businesses,” she noted.
The training, which brought together over 200 entrepreneurs with disabilities from across the region, also reflects MTN’s broader mission to actualise its credo of “everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life”.
MTN services – including voice, data, mobile money (MoMo) and enterprise solutions – are designed to help SMEs, especially PWD-led businesses, reach customers, manage payments and operate more efficiently. “By using MTN services, PWDs become part of a larger ecosystem where they can access opportunities, partnerships and continuous innovations tailored to support SMEs,” Madam Ackonor said.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, MTN runs the ‘Empower All Initiativ’, an economic empowerment programme targetted at women, youth and PWDs. The initiative provides training, grants and market access to help beneficiaries launch or scale up their businesses.
Corporate Communication and Marketing Lead at InnoHub, David Amoa, said this programme demonstrates the economic value and entrepreneurial potential of PWDs – which has long remained untapped. “PWDs represent a large pool of entrepreneurial activity and economic value that has been left latent for some time. This programme focuses on unlocking that talent, particularly in the Northern Region,” he said.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts at addressing inequity in access to opportunities and ensure PWDs are not left behind in national development.
