The Western Regional Health Directorate has confirmed 97 Mpox cases out of 387 suspected infections reported between January and July 12, 2025.
A situation report made available to the Business and Financial Times (B&FT) indicated that all 387 suspected cases were tested. Of these, 260 returned negative results, while results for 53 cases are still pending.
So far, 460 contacts linked to the suspected cases have been traced. Out of this number, 341 individuals have successfully completed the mandatory 21-day monitoring period.
Currently, 49 patients are receiving home-based care. The region has also recorded 48 recoveries, with no fatalities reported to date.
Mpox cases have been detected in 11 districts within the region. Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, Regional Director of the Health Directorate, disclosed that seven new suspected cases are under investigation.
To curb the spread, a Public Health Emergency Committee has been activated to coordinate response activities. Intensive contact tracing and door-to-door case searches are also ongoing.
“All confirmed cases have been mild. We have not recorded any infections among healthcare workers or any deaths,” Dr. Yeboah stated.
In the meantime, the directorate has intensified public education and community engagement through the distribution of educational materials, public announcements, radio discussions and mobile van campaigns targeting at-risk populations.
As part of broader containment measures, the Ghana Red Cross Society has trained 100 volunteers to support awareness creation across the Western Region.
