The National Insurance Commission’s (NIC) Western Regional Office has resolved 21 out of 30 insurance-related complaints lodged by policyholders in the first half of 2025.
Nine cases are still in the process of being resolved.
Speaking to Business & Financial Time (B&FT), Acting Western Regional Manager-NIC Nada Ashong revealed that the most common complaints involved unauthorised deductions following policy cancellations and delay in payment.
She identified incomplete documentation from policyholders as a key factor delaying claim settlements.
“Often, claimants fail to provide required documents; making it impossible for insurers to process claims. The NIC steps in to ensure these gaps are addressed,” she said.
Ms. Ashong also expressed concern over the low level of public awareness regarding insurance policy terms, describing it as a major challenge.
She emphasised the importance of continuous public education to bridge this knowledge gap.
“We’ve already launched an educational campaign and several institutions have invited us to engage their staff,” she stated.
According to her – as part of sanitising the industry – NIC will strengthen its monitoring and enforcement efforts this year to ensure full compliance with industry regulations.
Companies that breach these rules, she cautioned, will be sanctioned accordingly.
