The Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) has handed over a 20,000-litre community water system to the people of Apimanim in the Ahanta West Municipality in the Western Region, as part of its ongoing commitment to community development.
The project, valued at GH¢200,000, is the latest in a series of social intervention initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of residents in GREL’s operational area.
The project is expected to significantly improve access to clean water, ease the burden on women and children who currently travel long distances to fetch water, and enhance public health outcomes across the community.
Thierry Cauchy, Managing Director of GREL highlighted the importance of the project and its alignment with the company’s sustainability policy, which emphasises respect for human rights, responsible development and best management practices.
“At GREL, we believe our relationship with communities must go beyond business. It must translate into real, lasting development. This is why we have invested over five million euros in the last ten years into corporate social responsibility projects in areas such as health, education, water, electricity, sanitation and youth development,” he said.
He explained that the Apimanim water system was developed through extensive stakeholder consultation involving GREL, local chiefs and the community.
In the Ahanta West Municipality alone, Mr. Cauchy said GREL has implemented a wide range of community projects over the past decade. These include classroom blocks in Egyambra and Akwidaa, multiple KVIP toilet facilities, over a dozen community centres, scholarships for brilliant but needy students, free vacation classes for over 5,600 pupils, and numerous clean water systems.
He said under the umbrella of the Association of Chiefs on Whose Lands GREL Operates (ACLANGO), the company has also completed 19 water projects that now serve more than 20,000 people.
“We hope the Chiefs and residents of Apimanim will take full ownership of this project and ensure it is properly maintained. I appeal to all to join hands in stopping practices that are harmful to our environment and health,” he added.
Nana Kwesi Agyeman IV, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, praised GREL for a lot of projects dotted in the over 90 communities in its operational area.
He urged the Apimanim community to maintain the facility.
Ebenezer Aidoo, the Ahanta West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), also commended GREL for its numerous interventions.
“This is one of the biggest company in the Ahanta land; I will continue to support you so we will be able to develop the municipality”, he added.
