The Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), the corporate social responsibility arm of Newmont Ahafo Mines, has invested GH¢5,961,124.07 in educational infrastructure at the Gyedu Technical Institute in the Ahafo Region.
The investment covers the first phase of a three-storey 18-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities, the construction of a three-unit skills workshop, and a three-storey hostel facility. Additionally, NADeF has equipped the institute’s skills laboratory with modern teaching and learning tools and acquired 23.56 acres plot of land to support future expansion.

The Executive Secretary of NADeF, Elizabeth Opoku-Darko, announced the investment during the presentation of vocational equipment to the school. Items presented include 20 two-burner gas stoves, 15 gas cylinders, a locally manufactured gas oven with a two-bag flour capacity, a side-door refrigerator, deep freezer, embroidery and digital industrial sewing machines, and a locally built block-making machine. She noted that the funding for the vocational equipment came from a portion of a US$50,000 grant received from the World Gold Council, aimed at equipping students with employable skills.
The Director of Social Performance at Newmont Africa, Joseph Danso, expressed satisfaction with the project’s impact, stating that the institute is now a fully-fledged technical school receiving substantial support to enhance human capital development. He encouraged tutors to instill entrepreneurial skills in students to prepare them for self-employment after graduation, adding that continued success could attract further sponsorship.
The Head of Gyedu Royal Family, Nana Yaw Fosu Gyeabour, commended NADeF for its consistent support to the Gyedu Technical Institute. He noted that the school, established by the Gyedu Traditional Council in 1986 and currently enrolling 867 students, has received minimal government support despite national emphasis on technical and vocational education. He added that the equipment donated would empower local youth with practical skills and help reduce their involvement in illegal mining activities in the area.
