MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its dedication to digital inclusion through this year’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care initiative, with a strong focus on empowering women, persons with disability and underserved communities across the country.
Speaking at the ‘Y’ello Care’ launch in Kumasi, General Manager-MTN Northern Business District Nii Adotey Mingle emphasised that bridging the digital divide is more than a technological mission – it is a developmental necessity.
“Many rural women, farmers and persons with disabilities remain excluded from digital opportunities. This is not just a technology issue; it’s a development challenge. We at MTN are committed to bridging this gap because we are not just in the business of connecting people – we are also in the business of transforming lives,” he stressed.
This year’s edition of Y’ello Care will see MTN staff across all 16 regions of Ghana volunteering in their communities; not only as employees but also as mentors, teachers and agents of change.
The programme seeks to promote digital literacy, inclusion and empowerment at the grassroots level and is being celebrated on the theme ‘Connecting at the Roots: Connecting Communities Through the Use of Digital Tools’.
This year’s theme, Mr. Mingle noted, is “a bold reminder that true connection goes beyond signals and screens – it’s about ensuring that every Ghanaian, no matter their location or background, is part of the digital future”.
According to Mr. Mingle, these are not one-off gestures form part of the telco giant’s long-term commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian has a digital voice and a place in our national story.
He highlighted the transformative potential of true connectivity:
“I have seen the excitement of children discovering technology for the first time, farmers using mobile money to grow their businesses and women gaining confidence in digital tools.”
Now in its 18th year, the Y’ello Care initiative has become a flagship volunteerism campaign for MTN – encouraging staff to dedicate time and skills in service of their communities.
Corporate Communications Representative Charity Darko highlighted key activities lined up for this year’s ‘Y’ello Care’, including: Deployment of a Mobile ICT Van to selected schools for hands-on digital education; delivering digital skills training for women, youth and persons with disabilities; distribution of school uniforms to underprivileged students; Smart farming for 5,000 acres of land, targetted at women in the Northern Region; and Medical insurance (M-care), where MTN would pay for first three months subscription for beneficiaries.
Some staff members used the opportunity to share some experiences of previous ‘Y’ello Care’ they participated in – from helping construct ICT centres to painting schools and sweeping streets among others.
