Ghanaian nurse and breast cancer advocate, Naomi Ohene Oti has won the 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, an international honor that celebrates exceptional leadership and innovation in nursing.
Her recognition, which marks a historic first for Ghana and highlights the growing influence of African health professionals on the global stage, was announced by the Breast Society of Ghana.
Her win also acknowledges decades of work dedicated to improving cancer awareness, early detection, and patient empowerment in Ghana and across the continent.
The award, which comes with a $250,000 prize, was presented to Mrs. Oti after she was selected from over 105,000 nominees worldwide.
Through her role as a key member of the Breast Society of Ghana (BSoG), Mrs. Oti has led impactful nationwide campaigns aimed at dispelling myths around breast cancer and promoting routine screenings. Her grassroots efforts have significantly increased early diagnosis rates and opened up life-saving conversations in communities once gripped by stigma and silence.
Dr. Naa Adorkor Aryeetey, Vice President of the Breast Society of Ghana (BSoG) lauded Mrs. Oti’s achievements, citing her vision, grit, and compassion as an inspiration that elevates Africa’s voice in global health.
“Mrs. Ohene Oti’s achievement is a testament to what vision, grit, and compassion can accomplish. She has not only made her nation proud but has elevated Africa’s voice in global health discourse. Her work embodies the spirit of Ubuntu—a reminder that we thrive when we uplift others,” she stated.
Mrs. Oti’s advocacy has spurred collaborations with regional health institutions and inspired new cancer care training programs across West Africa. By focusing on local solutions to complex healthcare challenges, she has built a model for community-centered cancer prevention and support.
According to Mrs. Oti “I am committed to ensuring that quality cancer care is a right and not a privilege. To every nurse outside there: together we’re shaping the future, one act of care at a time. “
Health professionals and patient groups alike have hailed her as a continental beacon for equitable healthcare. Under her guidance, nurses have been empowered to take on greater roles in cancer prevention and education especially in underserved rural communities.
The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award is one of the world’s most esteemed nursing honors, designed to spotlight frontline health heroes who are shaping the future of care.
As Ghana continues to face rising cancer rates, her global recognition serves as a rallying call for more investment in community health and a powerful reminder of the transformative impact nurses can have.
