The management and staff of ibis Styles Accra City Hotel, a subsidiary of the Accor Group, have celebrated World Autism Awareness Day with students of the Dzorwulu Special School – reinforcing the parent company’s commitment to generosity and diversity.
As part of the celebration, the hotel’s staff gave the school a new look by painting several buildings; specifically, the girls’ dormitory and some classroom blocks.
Additionally, they donated tissues, supplied bedsheets to the school and provided lunch to all students and staff. They also dedicated some time to engaging the students.
Acting General Manager-ibis Styles Accra City Hotel, Shakti Singh, reaffirmed the parent company’s belief in diversity as the driving force behind the initiative they took to celebrate children on the spectrum.
Reminiscing on time spent with the children, Mr. Singh described the day as a memorable one, adding that he would love to visit the school again with his staff. “We had a memorable day today with the kids.
They were very happy and also exhibited their diverse talents through choreography. Together with my management team, we enjoyed ourselves and had a great time with the kids,” he said.
He commended the school’s administration for their warm reception, and teaching and non-teaching staff for their support toward a holistic upbringing for the students.
“We look forward to another opportunity to go and support such a cause,” he noted, highlighting the company’s commitment to associate with the school and extend support to it.
Autism Awareness Day is celebrated on April 2 of every year and seeks to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and promote acceptance.
The 2025 edition was held under the theme ‘Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’.
It highlights the intersection between neurodiversity and global sustainability efforts, showcasing how inclusive policies and practices can drive positive change for autistic individuals worldwide and contribute to achieving of the SDGs.
Lydia Tsagli, Sustainability Secretary of the hotel, commended the uniqueness of autistic patients and emphasised: “They do not need to be fixed but be understood, included and supported”.
She highlighted the company’s appreciation and love for all individuals on the spectrum and stressed their continuous commitment and support to the school.
To spice up the day’s activity, some students showcased their unique talents through a choreography that demonstrated that disability is indeed not necessarily inability.
Headmaster of the school, Mr. Fredrick Tetteh, applauded the hotel for their kind gesture and called on other institutions and individuals to assist the school, stressing that government cannot do it all.
He took the opportunity to urge all parents of children with special needs to enrol their wards into any of the special schools across the country.
“I invite parents of children with this condition to visit all the special schools throughout the country, because that is the right place they can get proper support for their wards,” he urged.
