The Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana (HASAG) has given the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) until Monday, June 23, to meet them for discussions on their conditions of service or they will embark on a nationwide strike.
The threat of strike action is contained in a press release dated June 20.
“We acknowledge receipt of your response to our letter of redress dated 12th June 2025, however we note with concern the absence of a firm commitment to a specific date for an engagement, as required under the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). This continued delay runs counter to the principles of good faith negotiations and materially hinders progress toward finalising the ongoing discussions between our parties which is causing strong agitations and unrest amongst our members,” the press release signed by the National President, Emmanuel Dennis Kofi Amoah read in part.
It added that, “The failure to set a clear timeline for engagement, despite repeated calls, is deeply regrettable and, quite frankly, unacceptable under the spirit and provisions of Ghana’s labour laws, which enjoins both parties to engage constructively and in good faith. In light of this, we hereby respectfully request that an urgent meeting be convened on Monday, 23rd June 2025, at 11:00 am to enable us to conclude the negotiation process in a timely and amicable manner.
HASAG urged the Chief Executive Officer of the FWSC, Dr Smith Graham “to avoid approaches that risk eroding the cordial and cooperative relationship we have sustained thus far.”
“Constructive engagement is not only a legal obligation but also a critical component of sustaining industrial harmony,” they noted.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the National Secretary of HASAG, Setosafia Knit Fiawoyife, explained the critical role accounting staff play in the healthcare delivery system, stressing that their absence would bring services to a halt.
“If we go on strike, there will not be any accounting duties. And when there is no accounting duty, before services are rendered to you, a bill will be presented to you to go and make payment and produce a receipt before you can pick your medication. And if there is no accounting staff to do that, or the internal officer to verify whatever bill that has been given to you, service cannot be rendered to the person,” he said.
HASAG members have threatened industrial action following an eight-month delay in the conclusion of their conditions of service negotiations. Talks, which began in November 2023, have stalled due to the failure of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to respond to multiple requests to resume discussions.
