President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s two major seaports, Tema and Takoradi, will begin operating 24 hours a day as part of the government’s much-anticipated 24-hour economy initiative.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Horticulture Expo, President Mahama said the policy is aimed at driving national productivity, boosting exports, and streamlining logistics operations across the country.
“We are also implementing a game-changing strategy — the 24-hour economy initiative — to unlock Ghana’s productive potential across all sectors,” he stated.
“I’m pleased to announce that on July 1, the 24-hour initiative policy will be ready to go into operation,” he added.
As part of this strategy, the Tema and Takoradi ports will transition to round-the-clock operations, a move expected to enhance trade efficiency, reduce processing delays, and attract foreign and domestic investment.
“This policy will provide the framework for continuous production, processing, and logistics in horticulture,” Mahama explained.
“I’m pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Transport are working together with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Shippers’ Council, and other stakeholders to soon declare the Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour ports,” he said.
The shift toward 24/7 operations marks a key component of the broader economic reform agenda of the Mahama administration, which aims to revitalize export-led sectors and ensure Ghana remains competitive in regional and global markets.
Stakeholders have long called for extended port operating hours to ease congestion, cut turnaround times for goods, and improve the overall logistics chain, especially for exporters in key sectors such as horticulture, mining, and manufacturing.
The full 24-hour economy policy will be officially launched on July 1, 2025, according to President Mahama.
