Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has said government cannot implement all demands contained in the new conditions of service for the striking nurses and midwives.
Speaking in an interview on 3FM’s Morning Show, June 11, the Minister explained that government is cautious not to create other problems while trying to implement some of the conditions of service of the nurses.
Citing the nurses’ demand for renewal of licenses, Mintah Akandoh noted that licenses are private properties of all professional health workers and that if government is not careful in satisfying certain entitlement, other professionals will end up demanding same.
“In as much as I appreciate the invaluable contributions by my cherished nurses in the health sector, if you attempt to solve one problem and you don’t solve it well, you end up creating hundreds if not thousands of other challenges.
“It is a fact that everybody license is a personal property and that is what makes you a professional,” he stated.
According to the Minister, not every demand by the nurses in their new conditions of service will be implemented by government.
However, he assured that government is committed to make sure that nurses and midwives get good conditions of services.
More than 128,000 nurses and midwives across Ghana on May 28, 2025 declared a nationwide strike action over government’s continued delay in implementing their new conditions of service which was agreed in 2024 under the Akufo-Addo government.
The Health Ministry has appealed to the nurses and midwives to resume work and allow for negotiations to take place to resolve the matter. However, the strike action has intensified as the nurses have refused to resume work, demanding that their new conditions of service is implemented.
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has criticised government for failing to meet the demands of the striking nurses and midwives.
Addressing the press in Parliament on Tuesday, June 1o, 2025 Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Nana Ayew Afriyie said government must change its posture towards nurses and midwives in the country.
He stressed that government must show respect to the health workers and address their concerns, describing the court action taken by the National Labour Commission as an action in “bad faith.”
"The truth is that each person's license is their personal property, it's what defines you as a professional.
There are other groups within the health sector who also operate with licenses, so not every aspect of the agreement can be implemented as it stands." – Kwabena Mintah… pic.twitter.com/o5bOm77dmS
